Shapovalov to Play Season’s First Tournament on Clay

Denis Shapovalov is set to make his clay debut this season. The 23-year-old Canadian is 12-7 on hard court this season. He led Canada to the ATP Cup title this season and then reached his maiden Australian Open quarterfinal.

Shapovalov’s best this season was a semifinal appearance in Dubai and in his last two tournaments, he won one and lost one at Indian Wells and lost his opening match to Lloyd Harris in Miami.

The World No. 16 has a 5-3 record in Madrid. He reached the semifinals on his debut in 2018, but hasn’t done much over the next two tournaments.

The left-hander has a 24-20 overall record on clay and was 7-6 last year, reaching his maiden final on the surface in Geneva.

Although he doesn’t have a great record on clay, Shapovalov will look to begin with a win.

Humbert Advances as Lucky Loser

World No. 45 Ugo Humbert has made it to the main draw as a lucky loser. The Frenchman defeated Pablo Andujar 6-4, 6-2 in the first qualifying round, but lost his second qualifying round to Kwon Soon-woo 6-7, 3-6.

Humbert, who is 3-9 overall this season, is 1-2 on clay. He lost in the opening round of the Monte-Carlo Masters but won his opening round match in Barcelona against Andujar before falling in the next to Alex de Minaur.

Humbert is 0-1 in Madrid, having lost his opening round match last year. Overall he has a poor 31.8% win record on clay and given his dismal form this season, there won’t be much expectations from the 23-year-old in Madrid.
