Novak Djokovic v Gael Monfils Head to Head

Djokovic has a perfect 17-0 record against the Frenchman at the tour level. But interestingly they have met on clay just once, and that was in Roland Garros in 2006.

They did meet once at the ITF level in 2004 and Monfils won that match, on clay.

Djokovic Will Look to Get Into Rhythm Quickly

There were signs of him getting back to form in Belgrade, but Novak Djokovic by his own admission is still not playing at the desired level but is getting there. Madrid could see the World No. 1 return to his elements.

In his three tournaments so far this year, he faced a shock quarterfinal defeat to Jiri Vesely in Dubai and then was upset by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in his opening match in Monte Carlo.

He got his winning touch back in Belgrade, where he eked out three tough three-set wins to reach the final, only to finish runner-up to Andrey Rublev in another three-setter. Now, in Madrid, Djokovic will be aiming to capture the first title of the season. The 20-time Grand Slam champion won his 86th tour-level title at the Paris Masters last year, which was also his fifth in 2021.

Since then he has remained without a title, but there will be lots of expectations from him in Madrid, where he won the title the last time he was here in 2019. Djokovic had beaten Stefanos Tsitsipas to claim his third Madrid title three years ago, which improved his tournament record to 28-8.

His two previous titles came against Rafael Nadal in 2011 and Andy Murray in 2016.

Djokovic has a remarkable 80.1% win record on clay, which includes 17 titles. He will be looking to get into a rhythm quickly in the opening match on Tuesday.

Monfils Off to a Flying Start

Gael Monfils is off to a flying start in Madrid, dispatching World No. 369 Carlos Gimeno Valero in just 56 minutes in the first round.

The Frenchman, ranked No. 21 in the world, didn’t face a single break point in the match, while he converted four of six break point opportunities. He served four aces and won 92% points on the back of his first serve.

It was a convincing performance from the 35-year-old, who is 12-5 this season and has already won a title (his 11th at the tour level) in Adelaide-1. H e was also a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open, but is playing on clay for the first time this year.

Monfils has a solid 131-88 record on clay, and is 14-11 in Madrid, with his best being a quarterfinal finish in 2010. He is also playing in the tournament for the first time since 2019, when he lost in the Round of 16 to Roger Federer.
