Denis Shapovalov v Andy Murray Head to Head

In their only previous meeting, Shapovalov beat Murray in straight sets at Wimbledon last year.

Shapovalov Overcomes Humbert

Playing for the first time on clay this season, Denis Shapovalov scored a tough win over Ugo Humbert in the first round of the Madrid Open on Monday to advance to the Round of 32.

The World No. 16 faced nine break points in the match, but saved all of them. He had just one breaking opportunity in the entire contest and he converted that in the second set to take the one-hour- and-57-minute contest 7-6 (7-1), 6-3.

The win over the French lucky loser improved the Canadian to 13-7 this season.

The 23-year-old had led his country to the ATP Cup title this year and also reached a maiden Australian Open quarterfinal. He was also a semifinalist in Dubai, but didn’t taste much success in Indian Wells and Miami and was playing on Monday after more than a month.

So rust could have been an issue as he had to tough it out against the out-of-form Humbert, but he was able to raise his level in the first set tiebreak and then made a brisk start to the second, winning three games in a row. Neither player held a break point in the first set, but Humbert had nine in the second, however, a determined Shapovalov didn’t allow the Frenchman to break even once.

The win improved his Madrid record to 6-3. His best in the tournament was a semifinal appearance in 2018. Last season he had faltered in the second round, can he reach the third round this year?

Murray Eases Past Thiem

Two-time Madrid Open champion Andy Murray registered his first win on clay in five years as he eased past Dominic Thiem, who continued to struggle on his return.

The Austrian, who made a return from wrist injury after a gap of nine months last month, has lost all four of his matches so far this season.

Murray, who was a champion in 2008 and 2015 and finished runner-up in 2016, improved his tournament record to 28-9 with the win on Monday.

The Briton didn’t face a singles break point in the first set and saved all three of them in the second. He also held three break points in the match, breaking Thiem once in each set.

Currently ranked No. 78 in the world, the 23-year-old is 11-8 this season. He was a finalist in Sydney, but hasn’t won consecutive matches in the five tournaments that he has featured in since then.

But having won for the first time on clay since beating Kei Nishikori at the Roland Garros quarterfinal in 2017, he would feel a lot more confident going into Tuesday’s match.

Shapovalov v Murray Prediction and Tip

This is going to be a close one. Murray won’t make it easy for the 14th seed, but eventually Shapovalov should advance.
