Jannik Sinner v Alex de Minaur Head to Head

They played three times before and Sinner won all three. The most recent one came at the 2022 Australian Open with Sinner winning 7-6(3) 6-4 6-4.

Sinner Barely Survives

It was a very close call for Jannik Sinner in the first round of the Madrid Open but it did not have to be. The Italian was firmly in the lead against Tommy Paul in the first set which he threw away. He lost in the tiebreak and was down 5-2 in the 2nd set but rallied somehow to win the match in three.

It’s nothing new for Sinner to rally like that as he did it a couple of times this season already. He’s proving to be a strong mental player which is important. He will need plenty of patience against the speed demon who is showing an improved level on clay.

Sinner will need to keep his errors in check. You can’t expect him not to be aggressive but he should control his errors. If he has more winners than errors he usually wins. Against de Minaur he will be tempted many times and how he balances that will determine the winner.

Speed Demon Extraordinaire

There is nothing Pedro Martinez did not try against de Minaur in round one but the Australian was always there. On every ball, on every volley and on every lob. It was very frustrating for Martinez who played pretty well, as well as he can play however de Minaur went through.

He wasn’t particularly rewarded for his efforts as he gets to play Sinner, a man he never beat before. Sinner has a very hard game to counter as you kind of need to outhit him. Running towards the ball and getting it back won’t matter much if Sinner is on point.

You’re mostly going to end up watching a winner fly past you. de Minaur will need to attack in this match to win and he can do it, especially on serve. He will need his serve to be good as well if he hopes to have a chance. It’s a slim chance but a chance nonetheless.

Sinner v de Minaur Prediction and Tip

The matchup so far has been dominated by Sinner simply because his game is the perfect game to counter de Minaur. You can’t engage in long rallies with the speed demon and Sinner has no plan on doing that. He will need to be sharp though as he will get beaten if he plays like he did against Paul.

For de Minaur everything will start with the serve. If he doesn’t get some free points on it he will be in trouble. Sinner returns well and attacks with his return so de Minaur will need to be honest. Overall it’s a tricky matchup for the Australian as he might fare better on a slower clay court.

I think this is a match Sinner will win if he is good enough. He’s been pretty good recently but his body is breaking down quite frequently and that’s not good. He needs to put in some gym work to make himself stronger and then he’ll be ready to take over. Sinner in 3.
