Hubert Hurkacz v Dusan Lajovic Head to Head

Hurkacz has won their only meeting at Wimbledon in 2019. He also won a qualifying round over Lajovic in Shanghai in 2018.

Hurkacz Survives Another Marathon

After battling past Bolivia’s Hugo Dellien in a close to three-hour first-round contest, World No. 14 Hubert Hurkacz needed two hours and 28 minutes to edge past Monte-Carlo Masters finalist Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round on Wednesday.

Hurkacz, who was a semifinalist in Dubai and Miami and a quarterfinalist in Monte-Carlo, improved his season record to 19-7 and his 2022 clay record to 5-1.

The 25-year-old is into the Round of 16 in Madrid for the second time in his third appearance. He now has a chance to reach his maiden quarterfinal in the Spanish capital.

On Wednesday, both players held serve for the first nine games of the match, before Hurkacz broke for the first time to take a one-set-to-love lead. The World No. 29 turned the tables on the Polish player in the second set, racing to a 5-1 lead. Hurkacz recovered briefly to pull a break back but couldn’t break again in the set to hand the Spaniard the second set.

In the decider, both players exchanged a break early in the set, but held on for the rest of the set to send the match into the deciding set tiebreak.

Hurkacz did have a match point on Davidovich Fokina’s serve at 4-5, but he missed out on the opportunity. But that didn’t prove to be costly as the World no. 14 emerged victorious in the tiebreak for a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) victory.

On Tuesday, Hurkacz had beaten the Bolivian 7-5, 6-7 (11-13), 6-3. He hit 14 aces in the first round and 13 in the second. He won a total of 119 points in the first match and 106 in the second.

It will be interesting to see if he is affected by the two sapping encounters in the third round.

Lajovic Stuns Ruud

Qualifier Dusan Lajovic scored an upset win over fifth seed Casper Ruud in the second round on Wednesday.

The Serbian, ranked No. 77th in the world, saved a set point in the first set tiebreak before taking a one-set lead.

Ruud found his rhythm in the second set, breaking Lajovic twice and forcing the decider.

Both players held serve over the first nine games in the third, before Lajovic broke in a nerve-wracking 10th game to beat the Norwegian 7-6 (9-7), 2-6, 6-4 in two hours and 18 minutes.

Lajovic won 79% points on the back of his first serve, saved two of five break points and converted two of five as well.

In the first round, the 31-year-old Serbian had beaten Borna Coric 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, that after beating Adrian Mannarino and Roberto Carballés Baena in the two qualifying rounds in straight sets.

With Wednesday’s win, Lajovic improved his overall season record to 7-13, and his clay record to 4-5. This is the first time this season that the 2019 Monte-Carlo finalist has won two main draw matches in a row. Can he make it three on Thursday and reach the Madrid Open quarterfinals for the second time in his career? He reached that far on his main draw debut in 2018.

Hurkacz v Lajovic Prediction and Tip

Both players needed three sets to fend off their first two opponents and will need to recover quickly.

Although Lajovic is far more experienced on clay and has a better record on the surface, Hurkacz has been in good form this season and had a good campaign in Monte-Carlo as well. Expect this match to go the distance as well, with the Polish player edging past the Serb.

Tip: Hurkacz to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
