Stefanos Tsitsipas v Grigor Dimitrov Head to Head

They played four times before with Stefanos leading 3-1. The most recent one came came in Barcelona not long ago with Tsitsipas winning 6-1 6-4.

Stefanos, the Master of Clay

Stefanos Tsitsipas has built up a solid reputation as a superb clay player and it has mostly to do with his forehand. He has ample time to pull himself out for his forehand which does a lot of damage. His backhand is also less vulnerable to serves which helps as well.

Generally, he’s been pretty good this year and as soon as he returned to clay he won a trophy. Monte-Carlo once again and he followed that up with a quarterfinal in Barcelona. A loss to Alcarza was disappointing but he did not play his best.

In Madrid, he did not play that well last year but he was fatigued and tired. He had some impressive wins earlier in his career reaching the final in 2019. He’s 25-8 on the year and 8-1 on clay so you know he is favoured in this matchup.

Sensational Start for Dimitrov

Grigori Dimitrov opened his Madrid campaign with a superb win over Maxime Cressy in round one. Had the American not served extremely well the win would have been even quicker than it was. He is serving well, he is hitting both the forehand and backhand at a high level and he is simply looking like a mini-Federer out there.

He followed that up with a dismantling of Diego Schwartzman 6-0 6-3 which was his best match of the season. Anybody who watched that match could see that Dimitrov played like a possessed man. He played probably close to his peak tennis when he was world number three.

That player is a very dangerous player and he certainly won’t bow down as easy as he did in Barcelona. Something in Madrid clicked this week for him and he’s looking stunning. 14-8 is the record so far and if he can produce consistent tennis like he did so far, he will pile up the wins in no time.

Tsitsipas v Dimitrov Prediction and Tip

So they played a couple of times before with Tsitsipas winning three of them. Two were on clay and both were won by Tsitsipas in straight sets. Last week in Barcelona it was 6-1 6-4. I think the Greek player will win this match as he is one of the best players on clay generally.

He rarely disappoints with a shocking performance but he will have to work. Dimitrov, I suspect will continue to play well but he won’t play as he did against Schwartzman. That’s unrealistic so I think Stef will have enough to down him. I do expect three sets as Dimitrov will be able to push him around a bit especially if he serves well.

Stefanos is too consistent to allow himself to be outplayed as Schwartzman and Dimitrov has yet to be tested. He’s generally not dealt well with it in his career so I expect some regression. Take the Greek.

Tip: Tsitsipas to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
