Ons Jabeur v Ekaterina Alexandrova Head to Head

This has been a rivalry dominated by Alexandrova, who leads Jabeur 6-1.

Six of the completed meetings happened at the ITF and qualifying levels between 2016 and 2018. Their only tour-level meeting took place in Moscow last year, when Jabeur retired while a set down.

Jabeur Knocks Out Halep

World No. 10 Ons Jabeur knocked out Simona Halep in the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open to reach the final four of a WTA 1000 event for the second time in her career.

The 2021 Indian Wells semifinalist is now one win away from a sixth tour-level final and a second this season, having finished runner-up to Belinda Bencic in Charleston earlier this year.

The Tunisian was off to a slow start, conceding an early break to the Romanian in the first set, but she came back well with a double break to take a one-set lead. She upped her level even further in the second set, winning 91% points on the first serve. She didn’t face a single break point, while breaking her opponent twice to win the 69-minute contest 6-3, 6-2.

The highest-ranked player left in the tournament, Jabeur has improved her season record to 18-7 during the course of the tournament. She began her campaign with a 7-6 (11-9), 6-1 win over Jasmine Paolini in the first round and then survived two three-setters to reach the quarterfinals.

First of those was against Varvara Gracheva in the second round, which Jabeur won 7-5, 0-6, 6-4. While in the next, she got her Charleston Open final revenge over Bencic, beating the Swiss 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in the Round of 16.

Jabeur, who has won just one WTA title in Birmingham, last year, has a great chance of winning another in Madrid. But she faces a mighty challenge in the semifinals, as she takes on a player who has always had an upper hand in their previous meetings.

Alexandrova Into Her Maiden WTA 1000 SF

Ekaterina Alexandrova continued her surprise run on clay this season, as she moved into the semifinals of a WTA 1000 event for the first time in her career on Wednesday. The Russian, who had never gone past the Round of 16 at a WTA 1000 event before, outplayed Amanda Anisimova in a dominant performance.

The World No. 45 is better known for her game on hard courts and doesn’t have a huge reputation on clay, but this season, she will be featuring in a second big clay court semifinal. Alexandrova had reached that far in Charleston previously, and thanks to Wednesday’s win has improved her main draw record on the surface to 9-2 this season, and it’s 11-2 including the qualifiers.

Surprisingly, that record on clay is far better than her 4-6 record on hard courts in the first quarter.

In the quarterfinal match, Alexandrova came back from a break down twice in the opening set, to prevent the American from seizing the initiative. The 27-year-old eventually got a third break in the ninth game and she held serve the next game to go one-set up.

The second set began with consecutive breaks, but Alexandrova surged ahead with a second break in the fifth game and then sealed the one-hour-and-30 minute contest with a sixth break in the match. The 6-4, 6-3 drubbing of the World No. 33 was her best performance in the tournament so far.

Having made the main draw through back-to-back straight set wins in the qualifiers, she ousted 10th seed Jelena Ostapenko 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the first round. Next she defeated Spain’s Nuria Parrizas-Diaz 6-4, 7-5. She needed three sets again to win her Round of 16 match, having to rebound from a set down to beat Marie Bouzková 6-7, 6-0, 7-5.

The 2020 Shenzhen Open champion is aiming to reach a fourth tour-level final.

Jabeur v Alexandrova Prediction and Tip

Although Alexandrova has dominated the rivalry, most of her wins came at a time when Jabeur was not playing at a level that saw her succeed post 2020. Jabeur is much different player now, and although that record will play in her mind, she should still be able to come through this one. The Tunisian is expected to win in three.

Tip: Jabeur to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
