Belinda Bencic had a solid run in Madrid and the Swiss player has generally looked rather well on both clays, red and green. She played a poor event last year in Rome and she will be determined to do better this time around. Her form at the time is really good and she only lost to Jabeur who might even win Madrid.
The Swiss player is 17-7 on the year and 8-1 on clay and that bodes really well. Unless she goes into her error-mode Bencic should be good against pretty much anyone. Her serve will be also crucial as it can give her a lot of free points.
She never went past the 2nd round in Rome and that is something to remember especially because she is playing a home player who can be tricky on clay. Still, she’s Bencic, she’s one of the best in the world and anything but a few victories in Rome would be disappointing.

Cocciaretto the Local Hope
Elisabetta Cocciaretto is a young Italian player who might have a very good career. The jury is still out on that but it’s hard to see her fail. She has a solid game for clay and she performed well on that surface this season as well as on others.
She already had somewhat of a breakthrough before almost breaking into the top 100 and reaching 108 on the rankings. She will be playing her 4th Rome Masters and she lost each time in the 1st round. Last year it was to Caroline Garcia but she put up a good fight.
She is 15-5 on the year and 11-3 on clay. Obviously, most of those wins came against players who are not ranked inside the top 100 but still with the local crowd she might be tricky to beat.
Bencic v Cocciaretto Prediction and Tip
So this is a very interesting matchup between two players who don’t play similar tennis. Bencic is an all-rounder who can play both offensively and defensively. Cocciaretto is a short-statured player that can play for hours and she is quite adept and playing defensive tennis.
She also loves to attack but sometimes that is tricky especially due to her stature. Bencic will certainly have the upper hand in most rallies and that is tricky for the Italian to overcome. She might be inspired by the crowd and put up a good fight but I don’t see her winning this. No chance.
