Norrie Looking to Impress on Clay

World No. 11 Cameron Norrie brings a 19-11 season record to Rome. The left-handed Briton hasn’t found much success at the Italian capital and is 2-2 from his previous appearances.

The 26-year-old, who has a 59% win record on clay, had an ordinary start to 2022. But a run to the title in Delray Beach gave impetus to his season and the three-time tour-level champion, reached a second consecutive final in Acapulco, but fell to Rafael Nadal in the final.

Norrie was also a quarterfinalist in Rotterdam and Indian Wells earlier this year, but is yet to find form on clay. He is 4-3 on the surface this year, having fallen in the quarterfinals in Barcelona and the Round of 16 in Madrid in the previous two tournaments.

Overall, Norrie has a 59% win record on clay and will be hoping to make a deep run in the tournament.

Nardi to Play Just His Second Tour-Level Match

Facing Norrie, will be 18-year-old Luca Nardi, who received a wild card for the tournament and will be playing just his second tour-level match in the opening round.

His main draw debut at the 2020 European Open ended with a three-set defeat to Marcos Giron.

The Italian player has already won two Challenger titles this year, winning on hard courts in Forli and Lugano. In the most recent Challenger tournaments in Barletta and Split last month, he reached the semifinals and quarterfinals respectively on both the clay court events.

Making his Masters 1000 debut at home, Nardi will be looking to pull off a shock win against the ninth seed.
