Anhelina Kalinina v Madison Keys Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players which came at the Miami Open played earlier this year. Kalinina had won that match in three sets to advance to the third round.

While Kalinina was knocked out of the Istanbul Cup in the very first round, that result was sandwiched by two solid performances in clay court competitions.

At the Charleston Open just before her Istanbul debacle, Kalinina won three rounds to make it to the quarterfinals before losing to Ons Jabeur. And on the other side of that Turkey defeat, she shocked Sloane Stephens, Garbine Muguruza and Emma Raducanu to reach the last eight stage yet again.

There, Kalinina went down in straight sets to Jil Teichman.

And it’s not just her results on clay that have impressed. Kalinina, who had won five titles at the lower level last season, also got to the fourth round in Miami which included a win over Keys too.

With her confidence sky-high, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise if she can make life difficult for her 22nd-ranked opponent in this opener.

Keys 1-2 on Red Dirt

A look at what Keys has done on clay in 2018 and 2019 would seem to suggest it is one of her favourite surfaces. Over those two seasons, she ended her campaigns on this surface with a 20-7 win-loss record.

This included a title win in Charleston and a semifinal and a quarterfinal appearance apiece at the French Open as well.

Since then, however, Keys’ performances on clay have taken a dip. In a pandemic-curtailed 2020 season, Keys lost her opener at French Open, and followed it up with just three wins from four tournaments in 2021.

This year has been no different for Keys, as she stumbled to a second match loss at Charleston to Belinda Bencic and then fell to a three-set defeat at the hands of Maria Sakkari in the Madrid Open opener – giving her a win-loss record of 4-7 over the past three seasons.
