Anett Kontaveit v Petra Martic Head to Head

The tally at the moment stands evenly at 1-1; they last met in the semifinal of WTA Palermo where Kontaveit won in straight sets.

Kontaveit Battling Form Woes

Anett Kontaveit may be the World No. 5 at the moment but by her standards, she has been battling a slight slump over the last couple of months.

Since reaching the consecutive finals in WTA St. Petersburg and Doha in February, the 26-year-old Estonian has fallen in the early rounds in Indian Wells, Miami, and Stuttgart.

In the first two, the defeats were rather shocking as they came at the hands of Marketa Vondrousova and Ann Li respectively. On the clay courts of Stuttgart, it was a more justifiable loss as Kontaveit lost to Aryna Sabalenka in three demanding sets.

The number five seed hasn’t achieved that much on the clay courts (three singles finals, the last one in 2020), but if there was a time to change that, the Rome Open makes for a favourable opportunity. It is here that Kontaveit has produced some of her finest clay performances by reaching the elite eight in 2017 and the semis in 2018.

Martic Knocks Out Muchova

Petra Martic will be pleased with her start in Rome as she dismissed Karolina Muchova 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. It’s been quite a journey as she started in the qualifying rounds here and dismissed Ellen Perez and Susan Bandecchi in straight sets.

Last season, the Croat reached the semifinal – her first such feat in a WTA 1000 event – but this time around, it may be a far more challenging ask.

Should she overcome Kontaveit here, things will only get difficult for Martic as she potentially meets Emma Raducanu, Victoria Azarenka, or Iga Swiatek in the following rounds.

Since her defining run in Rome, the current World No. 47 hasn’t reached the semis in any other WTA event on the tour. The closest she came to was in the Indian Wells Open this season when she reached the quarterfinal by overcoming Tamara Zidansek, Emma Raducanu, and Liudmila Samsonova.

Martic last played in Madrid where she made it to the second round as a qualifier by surpassing Dalma Galfi, LuciaBronzetti, and Samsonova once again. However, she fell to Amanda Anisimova in three sets but did reach the top 50.

Martic v Kontaveit Prediction and Tip

Kontaveit is the odds-on favourite here but Martic will be confident of her chances. It is not too difficult to imagine this being a long affair. Martic makes for a good underdog bet while on the safer side, this can very well go over 20.5 games.
