Aryna Sabalenka v Jessica Pegula Head to Head

It’s advantage Sabalenka with 2-1 as the Belarusian won their last two meetings (both on clay) in straight sets. The most recent match took place in the 2021 Madrid Open.

Sabalenka Drops in the Ranking

Aryna Sabalenka failed to defend her title in the Madrid Open last fortnight and as a result, she has slipped out of the top five to the #8 position in the ranking. She succumbed to Amanda Anisimova in the opener in three sets.

Even though the 24-year-old is still in the top 10, she needs to deliver some big wins soon – otherwise, she may be knocked out in a matter of weeks.

A lot of Sabalenka’s current season has been erratic as she struggles to build on her stellar 2021 year. With the exception of her runner-up feat in Stuttgart and a quarterfinal appearance in Doha, the number three seed hasn’t fared that well at all.

Moreover, a fair share of her recent losses have come at the hands of Kaja Juvan, Rebecca Peterson, Kaia Kanepi, Jasmine Paolini, and Irina-Camelia Begu in the opening rounds. For a top 10 player to lose to these lower-ranked athletes does not bode good news for her.

Here in Rome, Sabalenka started with a straight-set win over Shuai Zhang. Interestingly, she has never made it past the third round in the tournament.

Pegula Enjoys a Walkover

World No. 11 Jessica Pegula will be pleased with how things went for her in round two. She made it to the next stage without stepping on the court as Anhelina Kalinina retired from the match.

In the opener, the rising American star defeated Liudmila Samsonova in three sets to continue building her superb clay form.

She arrived in Italy on the back of a superb run in Madrid where she reached the final but lost to Ons Jabeur. Nonetheless, it was Pegula’s biggest final of her career and over two weeks, she defeated players like Camila Giorgi, Kaia Kanepi, Bianca Andreescu, and Jil Teichmann.

Earlier in the season, Pegula also reached the semis in Miami and the quarterfinal in the Australian Open. Her tally now stands at 19-10 and has certainly been more consistent than Sabalenka. Plus, Pegula also picked up two doubles titles in 2022 (Melbourne Set and Qatar Open).

Sabalenka v Pegula Prediction and Tip

By the looks of it, it may just be a matter of time before Pegula replaces Sabalenka in the top 10. The history is on Sabalenka’s side but given her shaky form, Pegula will fancy her chances.

This should be an interesting match that can swing either way.
