Casper Ruud v Jenson Brooksby Head to Head

This is the first meeting between the two.

Ruud Survives Van de Zandschulp Test

World no. 10 Casper Ruud fought back from a set down to defeat the Netherlands’ Botic van de Zandschulp for the first time in their third meeting and advance to the second round in Rome Masters.

The Dutchman, who had beaten the Norwegian at the U.S. Open last year and in Munich this year, took the first set in the tiebreak, but Ruud made a solid comeback in the second and third sets to win the match 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-4 in two hours and 21 minutes.

Van de Zandschulp hit 38 winners, 20 more than Ruud, in the match; but it was Ruud’s better serving that helped him win the contest. After both traded a break in the first set, Ruud broke twice in the second and once in the third, while not getting broken again in the match.

A solid clay court player, Ruud has struggled during the European clay season this year. The 23-year-old who won the title in Buenos Aires and finished runner-up in Miami, failed to win consecutive matches in Monte-Carlo and Munich and lost in the first round in Madrid. He did win two in Barcelona, but couldn’t go beyond the quarterfinals.

Can the tough win in the opening round in Rome help him lift his game in the third round? He was a semifinalist in 2020 and will have to be in top form to reach that far again.

Brooksby Knocks Out Goffin

World no. 38 Jenson Brooksby had picked up his first tour-level win on clay in the first round on Monday against Italy’s Flavio Cobolli. On Wednesday, the 21-year-old earned his second win on the surface by knocking out Marrakech champion David Goffin in straight sets.

Brooksby had a fast start to the contest, bageling the Belgian in no time, but was stretched to the limit in the second before coming out unscathed.

Up a break, Goffin held two set points on his serve at 5-4, but he squandered both as a determined Brooksby fought back to keep his hopes in the set alive. Both exchanged as many as three breaks each in the set, before Brooksby raced away in the tiebreak for a 6-0, 7-6(7-1) victory.

Brooksby had beaten Cobolli 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round.

The win improved Brooksby’s season record to 10-6. He has already featured in the Dallas final this season and is one win away from matching his best at Masters 1000 events. He had made it to the Round of 16 in both Indian Wells and Miami this year.

Ruud v Brooksby Prediction and Tip

Given Ruud’s experience on clay, he will be the favourite in this contest. Expect Brooksby to put up a fight, but Ruud to advance.
