Sebastian Baez v Benjamin Bonzi Head to Head

Baez and Bonzi have not clashed at any level before this.

Baez Exits Rome With Career-High Ranking

Sebastian Baez was knocked out of the Rome Masters this past week by Alexander Zverev, but his second-round defeat to the experienced German did not harm his ranking status one bit.

Baez’s run from qualifying to the main draw of the Italian Open earned him a place in the world’s Top 40 for the first time and there is a very strong chance of achieving a Grand Slam seeding at next month’s French Open.

If it happens, Baez will need to put in a little more work at Lyon Open this week where he is the number seven seed. Having already bagged a maiden ATP title in Estoril, the 21-year-old is a player more at home on clay than on any other surface. He enters the tournament in France sitting at No. 37 in the world rankings, five spots away from a seeding spot at Roland Garros which begins in a week’s time.

Baez has recorded 13 wins on clay on the ATP Tour, whilst also finishing runner-up in Santiago in February. He is one of the dark horses to walk away from Lyon with the title.

Bonzi Bags Second Challenger Title Of 2022

Benjamin Bonzi knows no limits when it comes to Challenger Tour tennis. Having amassed six titles at that level in 2021, he has been in a similarly rich vein of form in 2022.

He captured his second title of the season at Aix-en-Provence a week ago, proving that his clay-court game is up to speed. Although his run was littered with a pair of stumbling blocks, he had a fairly easy time dispatching Gregoire Barrere in the final.

Bonzi lost his first match of the season on the Challenger Tour in Bordeaux a few days ago, falling in the quarterfinals to Andrea Pellegrino. Despite taking the first set, he relinquished his lead and the match.

With just 48 hours of rest time, the 25-year-old will play the fast-improving Baez in one of the most intriguing matches of the first round in Lyon.

Can Bonzi score the upset?

Baez v Bonzi Prediction and Tip

You could make a case for Bonzi having all the momentum. But I doubt he has very much left in the tank after a very taxing two weeks of clay-court tennis. Baez should be the favorite and rightly so.
