Norrie Looking to Find Form on Clay

A title in Delray Beach and a runner-up finish in Acapulco had taken Cameron Norrie into the top 10 of the ranking in April. But the Briton has not had the same effect on clay this year as a result of which he has slipped out of top 10. But the World No. 11 has an opportunity to regain his form in a tournament where he has delivered solid results over the last two years.

The 26-year-old left-hander has a 7-3 record in Lyon. He was a semifinalist on his debut in 2018, lost in the opening round in 2019, but made it to the finals last year before falling to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Overall, Norrie is 20-12 this season, but on clay he has a 5-4 record this year. He couldn’t win a match in Monte-Carlo, lost in the quarterfinals in Barcelona, and in the Round of 16 in Madrid. In his last tournament in Rome, he won his opener against Italy’s Luca Nardi, but was beaten in the second round by Marin Cilic.

Seeded No. 1 in Lyon, there will be expectations from Norrie. Can he live up to them?

Cerundolo Overcomes Duckworth

World No. 44 Francisco Cerundolo won his first match on European clay this season as the Argentine knocked out James Duckworth in the opening round in Lyon.

Cerundolo won 84% points on the back of his first delivery, converted four of 11 break points and saved three of five to win the one hour and 50 minute contest 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

A semifinalist in Rio and a quarterfinalist in Buenos Aires, Cerundolo stunned everyone with his run to the semifinals in Miami this year. He eventually fell to Casper Ruud but that performance helped him break into the top 50 in the world.

He has fizzled out since then. Although the 23-year-old is better known as a clay court player, he failed to qualify in Munich and Madrid. He won both qualifying round in Italy but lost the opening round to John Isner. Having won his first on European clay, her will be looking to build on the start.
