Thanasi Kokkinakis v Federico Delbonis Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 26 year old Australian, and the Argentine, who is five years older.

Kokkinakis Overcomes Italian Clay Court Specialist

Kokkinakis, the reigning Australian Open doubles champion, had only played one previous match on clay this year prior to his first round encounter, and he had lost that.

However, if there were any signs of nerves against the Italian world number 52, Fabio Fognini, a man brought up on clay, they were hardly in evidence as he completed a convincing straight sets victory.

It was a match dominated by serve, with few break opportunities.

However, having saved three break points in his opening service game, Kokkinakis broke Fognini next game and seemed on course to take the first set, before Fognini hit back, But, serving to stay in the first set, the Italian was broken again.

Kokkinakis wrested control of the match with an early break in the second set, and, from there, all he had to do was hold serve, something he did without undue difficulty.

Delbonis Ends Poor Run

By contrast to his opponent, Delbonis prefers clay over any other surface, which is why his record in 2022 was so disappointing prior to arriving in Geneva.

Although he reached the semi-finals in Buenos Aires, since crossing the Atlantic, he had only won one match, and that was in Monte Carlo five weeks ago.

It, would, therefore, have come as a relief more than anything that he was able to end that run with a first round victory over the world number 101, Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania, on Monday.

The Lithuanian began badly, dropping the opening service game of the match, and, when he was broken again, Delbonis had the chance t\o serve for the set.

But three set points came and went, and Bernakis went on to recover one of the breaks.

It was only a temporary reprieve, however, as two games later the Argentine could claim the set.

One break of serve was enough to put the Argentine in control of the second set, and Berankis had no real answer after that.

Kokkinakis v Delbonis Prediction and Tip

In normal circumstances, Delbonis’ greater familiarity with clay would make him a clear favourite. However, given the way he has struggled recently, and the form Kokkinakis showed in Fognini, it may well be a close match.

The Argentine may just have the edge, though.

Tip: Delbonis to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
