World number 317, Johan Nikles came through the qualifying draw by beating Lukas Rosol and Peter Gojowczyk in straight sets. He then went on to beat compatriot Leandro Riedi who was given a wildcard in the main draw 5-7, 7-6(3), 7-5.
This is a remarkable moment for the Swiss player as prior to this tournament Nikles had never won an ATP tour match. And now he has the chance to reach the quarterfinal if he defeats Griekspoor.
Nikles is predominantly a clay court player as a bulk of his career matches have been played on the red clay. He is 12-6 on clay this year and overall 14-8.
