Christopher O’Connell v Reilly Opelka Head to Head

The players play each other for the first time.

O’Connell Riding High on Confidence

Australian tennis player Christopher O’Connell is in great form and is making it count here in Geneva. He came through the qualifiers defeating Goncalo Oliveira and Benjamin Hassan in straight sets.

He faced clay court specialist Albert Ramos Vinolas and managed to prevail 7-6(5), 6-4. O’Connell was lucky to win the first set as Ramos Vinolas looked in control of the tie break but was not able to close it out.

However, O’Connell shifted gears in the second set and was untouchable on his serve. He is playing with supreme confidence and will be a big challenge for Opelka.

World number 124, O’Connell has been having a good season, reaching the third round of the Australian Open, having a 21-9 record, 12-3 on clay which includes winning the Split challenger last month.

Opelka Looking to Overcome his Erratic Results on Clay

World number 18, Opelka won the first four matches of his clay season to win the ATP Houston title. That was followed by three straight first round exits (Munich, Madrid and Rome) on the European clay.

While Opelka has already proved he is more than just a serve bot, he is yet to sustain any results on clay excluding the occasional run. Even last year he made a semifinal run in the Rome masters but was really average in the other tournaments.

Opelka played here in Geneva last year and faced a first round exit then too. He arrives here this year with a 17-9 record, and 4-3 on clay.

The American’s game style definitely doesn’t suit the clay however with his big serve and forehand he can claw out wins. The Geneva clay is slightly quicker and he could take advantage of it.

Opelka v O’Connell Prediction and Tip

O’Connell is playing at his best level and has a very big serve to match Opelka toe to toe. The match should definitely have a tie break, but considering the recent results of Opelka, his game will dip at some point. This second round match should be a three setter .
