Ruud Tops Kokkinakis

Defending champion Casper Ruud continued his march towards another Geneva title as the World No. 8 reached the semifinals with a straight sets win over Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis on Thursday.

The Norwegian, who had begun his campaign with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 victory over Benoit Paire in the second round on Wednesday, needed an hour and 44 minutes to beat the World No. 85, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) in the quarterfinal.

The second seed won 90% of the points on his first serve, saved both the break points that he faced and converted one of two to reach a second consecutive semifinal on clay, following his run to the final four in Rome.

The win improved the Norwegian to 22-9 in 2022. A seven-time champion from 10 tour-level finals, Ruud won his only title of 2022 in Buenos Aires and reached a maiden ATP 1000 title in Miami, before falling to Carlos Alcaraz.

World No. 18 Reilly Opelka struck 14 aces and won 85% first serve points to oust the Netherlands’ Tallon Griekspoor in the quarterfinal on Thursday.

The American, who had come into the tournament after having lost his opening matches in Munich, Madrid and Rome, seems to have regained the form that saw him go all the way to the title  at the Houston Open in April.

Opelka, who had a first round bye, had begun the tournament with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Australia’s Christopher O’Connell in the second round.

He continued the good work in the quarterfinal. He was broken twice by Griekspoor in the match, but he won the key moments, converting three of seven break points and winning the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Opelka is 19-9 this season and apart from winning the Houston title, he also won the title in Dallas and finished runner-up in Delray Beach. He is 6-3 on clay and will be looking to reach another final on Friday.
