De Minaur Enters Second Clay Court SF in 2022

Alex de Minaur reached a second clay court semifinal of the season after his quarterfinal opponent Yosuke Watanuki of Japan retired with a back problem on Thursday.

The Japanese lucky loser had lost the first set 4-6 before pulling out of the contest.

De Minaur, ranked 21st in the world, is the fourth seed in the tournament and so he had received a first round bye. He registered a come-from behind win over Ugo Humber to kickstart his campaign on Wednesday. He was outplayed in the first set by the Frenchman but he made a solid comeback to win 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The Australian didn’t have a great record on clay before this season, but a run to the semifinals in the Barcelona Open and now another final four appearance has improved his season record to 9-4 on the surface.

A five-time winner on the tour, De Minaur will now be aiming to reach a first final since his run to the title in Eastbourne last June.

Molcan Enters Semis Without Dropping a Set This Week

Marrakech finalist Alex Molcan would have been disappointed not to have qualified for Madrid and Rome events, but he has struck form in Lyon and is one win away from a third ATP final in two years.

The World No. 47 is yet to win a title on the tour, but he came very close to winning one in Belgrade 2 last year and in Morocco this year, only to finish runner-up to Novak Djokovic and David Goffin respectively.

He has looked in good touch in Lyon so far, reaching the semifinals without losing a set. The left-handed Slovak beat Jo Wilfried Tsonga 6-4, 6-4 in the first round, then knocked out the fifth seed Karen Khachenov 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) in the second round.

In the quarterfinal on Thursday, Molcan knocked out Argentina’s Federico Coria 6-3, 6-2 in just an hour and 30 minutes. The 24-year-old is 13-7 this season and will be looking to keep the impressive run going.

De Minaur v Molcan Prediction and Tip

Molcan is a very good clay court player and he will trouble De Minaur on Friday. Expect a good contest, with a third set separating the two.
