Nikoloz Basilashvili v Maxime Cressy Head to Head

Basilashvili and Cressy are poised to meet for the second time at a Grand Slam level. Their solitary meeting before this was won by the Georgian in straight sets at last year’s US Open.

Can Basilashvili Flip the Script in Paris?

We are at the halfway mark in the 2022 season and Nikoloz Basilashvili is stuck at seven wins. If the Georgian is unable to arrest a terrible run of results in the second half of the campaign, he could very well be on course to register his lowest win tally since 2020, where he did not play a full calendar.

Basilashvili is clearly a player who can flip the script when you least expect it. When his game is on song, he can feel positive about himself and is extremely tough to beat. But those moments have been few and far between this season.

Three of his seven wins this season came in one tournament when he advanced into the finals in Doha in mid-February. A runner-up finish in Qatar’s capital remains his major highlight of a subpar season.

His record on clay is also hardly inspiring. Aside from a first-round win over Fabio Fognini in Madrid and battling against Carlos Alcaraz, he has looked erratic. Each  of his six defeats on clay this season has been in straight sets, so could he throw the towel when he takes on Maxime Cressy?

Cressy Set For Main Draw Debut

Maxime Cressy’s breakout season on the ATP tour has reached another height. The Paris-born American will be playing in the main draw of the French Open for the first time, and you can bet he will be giving it his best shot against Basilashvili.

Cressy’s ranking was not sufficient to get him into the main draw of the top-tier Masters 1000 tournaments on clay prior to Roland Garros, so he had to play a bunch of qualifying matches. That took a toll on him by the time he got to the main draws, with clay significantly wearing him down.

The American is also not capable of maximizing his biggest strengths on the surface. His big serve can be neutralized due to the slow surface. And his net approach gives his opponents time and space to either pass him into the open court or make him play awkward volleys in next to no time.

Nonetheless, Cressy has not been one to shy from a challenge. He has beaten the likes of Dan Evans and Marton Fucsovics in recent weeks and pushed Laslo Djere in Monte Carlo.

Basilashvili v Cressy Prediction and Tip

This has the potential to be a sizable banana peel for Nikoloz Basilashvili. But assuming he doesn’t overcomplicate matters, I expect him to come through.

Tip: Basilashvili to win AND both players to win a set: 6/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
