Collins Looking for Consistency on Clay

Australian Open runner-up Danielle Collins begins her fifth French Open campaign on Sunday. The World no. 9 hasn’t played much since her best-ever Grand Slam showing earlier this year. She had beaten Iga Swiatek in the semifinal in the Melbourne major before falling to Ash Barty in the final.

Collins, who has struggled with back and abdominal injury recently, featured in two clay curt events this year, winning just one match each in Madrid and Rome. That win in Rome came over former French Open champion and a solid clay court player, Simona Halep. So the American would take heart from that performance as she looks to make a deep run in Paris.

The hard-hitting 28-year-old won her maiden WTA title on clay in Pallermo last year. She went on to add another title in Silicon Valley, which was a hard court event.

Collins, who was also a quarterfinalist in Miami this year, reached the last eight in Roland Garros in 2020, which remains her best in the clay court major. She was ousted by Serena Williams in the third round last year.

Tomova to Make Main Draw Debut

World no. 113 Viktoriya Tomova is set to make her main draw debut at the French Open after failing to come through the qualifiers for five consecutive years.

The 27-year-old Bulgarian wasn’t able to win all three of her qualifiers this year either, but benefitted from a strong showing in the qualifying rounds as she earned a lucky loser’s spot in the main draw.

Tomova had knocked out Britain’s Katie Swan and rallied to beat Russia’s Marina Melnikova in the first two qualifying rounds respectively. But she went down fighting to Olga Danilović in the third qualifying round on Friday.

Tomova, who has mostly been playing at lower level events, has 16 ITF titles and 8 runner-up finishes. She has an 8-7 record in clay court finals and most recently finished second best at an ITF event in Portugal in April.
