Swiatek, the Heavy Favourite in Paris

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek arrived in Paris with many expectations and speculations about going the distance. She is currently on a 28-match winning streak and has proven absolutely, menacingly difficult to overcome.

The top seed won the Slam here in 2020 while last year, she was the doubles runner-up with Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

This season, the 20-year-old Pole has won five titles – all of which came consecutively. Swiatek won the Sunshine Doubles in Indian Wells and Miami and followed it with another title run in Stuttgart and most recently, the Italian Open.

In these tournaments, Iga has defeated some big names like Ons Jabeur, Aryna Sabalenka, Bianca Andreescu, Victoria Azarenka, Emma Raducanu, Petra Kvitova, Naomi Osaka, Simona Halep, Angelique Kerber, Maria Sakkari, and Anett Kontaveit.

The only thing that can stop Swiatek right now is herself – should she start feeling the pressure of the tour. However, she has displayed exceptional maturity and understanding – something that’s unseen even in the most experienced pros.

Tsurenko Clears the Qualifiers

Lesia Tsurenko made it to the main draw at the Roland Garros 2022 after defeating Emiliana Arango, Sara Errani, and Yuki Naito in the qualifiers.

This is only her third clay tournament of the year and so far, she hasn’t fared that great. Her last stint was in Istanbul where she fell to Ajla Tomljanovic in round two as a qualifier; before that, she lost in the Marbella Challenger first round to Oceane Dodin.

Most of Tsurenko’s season has been along these lines, marked with early exits. Her clay track record isn’t strong either as she is yet to reach a WTA final on the surface. Her last singles final came in January 2019 Brisbane International.

As for her run in the Paris Slam, she reached the third round in 2019 but has since lost in the qualifiers in the last two editions.

Swiatek v Tsurenko Prediction and Tip

One is the current world number one, the other is ranking some 120 odd places below her opponent. Swiatek is the clear favourite here, it’s just a matter of how big she wins this one. Handicap may be the way to go but for those looking for a safer option, the Pole should get this in straight sets.
