The two have never met at any level before.

Can Bencic Finally Deliver in the Paris Major?

She has made five attempts at Roland Garros so far, but Belinda Bencic’s best remains a third round appearance in 2019.

Things could change this year as the Tokyo Olympics gold medalist has displayed good form, particularly on clay, which has been her least preferred surface in her professional career.

A six time tour-level champion from 14 finals, Bencic reached her first-ever clay court final in Charleston this year and went on to win the title by defeating Ons Jabeur in the title clash.

Thanks to that run in Charleston, the World No. 14 is 9-2 on clay in an 18-8 season so far. Jabeur got her revenge over the Swiss in the Round of 16 in Madrid, while Amanda Anisimova ended Bencic’s run in Italy after just two matches. Bencic will look to put those setbacks behind her quickly and start well in Paris.

Jani Gets a Lucky Loser’s Spot

Facing Bencic is the opener will be Hungary’s Reka Luca Jani.

The 30-year-old, who is currently sitting on a career-high ranking of 128, will be making her French Open debut on Sunday. It will also be just her second match in a Grand Slam, 11 years after falling in the first round of her debut at the U.S. Open.

Jani won her first qualifying round against Audrey Albie in straight sets, before needing three to register a comeback win over Jaimee Fourlis. In her third qualifying round, the Hungarian went down to Serbia’ Aleksandra Krunić in straight sets, yet found a place in the main draw as a lucky loser.

A clay court specialist, Jani has won 24 titles at the ITF level, winning 22 of those on the surface. She has won one and lost one ITF final this year, but has played just one main draw match on the tour. She will have her task cut out against the 14th seed on Sunday.
