Liudmila Samsonova v Danka Kovinic Head to Head

It’s 1-0 to Samsonova who defeated Kovinic as recently as the Indian Wells Open this season in straight sets.

Samsonova on Shaky Grounds

Liudmila Samsonova started the season on a stellar note – she cracked the top 30, reached her career-best ranking at #25, and started to make waves on the tour.

Of late, however, her form took a slight hit as she fell in the opening rounds in the Madrid Open and Rome Open – respectively to Petra Martic and Jessica Pegula. Before that, the 23-year-old was a semifinalist in Porsche Tennis Grand Prix where she fell to Iga Swiatek (but not before dismissing Karolina Pliskova).

Samsonova also reached the fourth round in Indian Wells and the quarterfinal in Adelaide 1.

Although she is a bit inconsistent at the moment, she has made noticeable gains on the tour. Last year, she jumped some 90 odd places in the ranking to end the season as World No. 39 with a tally of 24-17. Samsonova also surpassed a few notable players like Paula Badosa, Belinda Bencic, and Victoria Azarenka.

Kovinic, Looking Confident

Danka Kovinic, hailing from Montenegro, has had a good clay swing and certainly appears to be well prepared for the Roland Garros. Playing mainly in low-tier events, she most recently was a semifinalist in Marbella and later followed it with a title run in ITF Wiesbaden.

However, in the subsequent ITF event in Spain, she retired in her opening match against the #318-ranked Marina Bassols Ribera.

Elsewhere this season, the 27-year-old, who is the current World No. 95, reached the third round in the Indian Wells Open and Australian Open where she upset the likes of Emma Raducanu, Pliskova, and Jil Teichmann.

Over the course of her career, Kovinic has also bagged an impressive 20 ITF finals on clay courts.

Samsonova v Kovinic Prediction and Tip

Samsonova may be the higher-ranked player but Kovinic is in a relatively better form. Granted that the latter has been competing in low-tier events only, but it is important to note that the Russian is not entirely immune from shock defeats.

This will be a good match that can likely swing either way. Kovinic makes for a good bet, especially considering her odds but for those looking for a safer option, this match may go to three sets.
