Norbert Gombos v Pedro Cachin Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 31-year old Slovak, and the Argentine, who is four years younger.

Slovak Number Two Gombos

Gombos was the Slovakian number one for some time, but he has been eclipsed over the past year by the achievements of Alex Molcan.

Two years ago he reached the thirds round in Paris, and that remains his best performance in a Grand Slam.  That, though, was at a time when his ranking was enough to earn him entry into the main draw, unlike this year when he had to qualify first.

In his first match in the qualifying competition he had to come from a set down to overcome the challenge of the local competitor, Constant Lestienne.

He then beat another Frenchman Gabriel Debru, and booked his berth in the first round proper by defeating Tim van Rijthoven of the Netherlands in straight sets.

Lucky Loser Cachin

Cachin has recently reached his highest ever singles ranking, boosted by reaching three clay court finals on clay on the Challenger tour, finishing runner-up in Marbella, but claiming the titles in Madrid and Prague.

This, though, is a novel experience, never having previously qualified for a Grand Slam event before.

It looked like it was not to be, however. Having sailed past Sumit Nagal of India and then the challenge of Marco Moroni of Italy, his run was ended by Pavel Kotov of the Czech Republic, the world number 143, winning just five games off him.

Lady luck, though, then shined on the Argentine because when it came to announcing the lucky losers, he was one of the names drawn out of the hat.

Gombos v Cachin Prediction and Tip

Although Cachin owes his presence in the first round to good fortune as a lucky loser, he will start this match favourite because of his greater prowess on clay.
