Diego Schwartzman began his ninth French Open campaign with a four-set win over Russian qualifier Andrey Kuznetsov.

The World no. 16, who was a semifinalist in 2020 and a quarterfinalist in 2018 and 2021, made fewer errors than the Russian, converted 8 of 10 break points and saved 7 of 13 to win the two-hour-and-41 minute contest 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.

The win improved the Argentine to 22-11 in 2022. He had two runner-up finishes this year, in Buenos Aires and Rio and was a semifinalist in Cordoba and Barcelona, but could only win a match each in Madrid and Rome in the run-up to the French Open.

Munar Makes a Solid Start

World No. 87 Jaume Munar won a first round match at Roland Garros for the third time in his career as the Spaniard defeated Germany’s Daniel Altmaier in the opener on Sunday.

In a two-hour-and-55-minute contest, Munar dominated the first two sets, before conceding the third to give the World No. 53 a glimmer of hope. But he regrouped and regained his form in the final set to oust the German 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

Broken five times in the match, Munar converted 10 of 22 break points to move into the second round.

The win means the Spaniard is now 11-11 this year. The winner of the Marbella Challenger in April has won consecutive main draw matches at the tour level just thrice this season.
