Elise Mertens was blessed in round two when her opponent Marie Bouzkova withdrew from the match, without stepping on the court. The Czech, citing illness, retired from the tournament – thus giving the Belgian an extra day of rest.
The 26-year-old will hope to make the most of this chance, especially in light of her recent slump in singles form. She is now ranked World No. 32 – a far cry from her previous best ranking at the #12 position.
Her highlights entail reaching the quarters in St. Petersburg, Strasbourg, and round four in the Australian Open. The fact that she has lost to the likes of Kaja Juvan, Rebecca Peterson, Linda Fruhvirtova, Daria Saville, and Jil Teichmann certainly makes for an interesting precedent for Gracheva to follow.
That said, Mertens has done well in the doubles discipline to retain her spot in the top three as the world number two. Partnered with Veronika Kudermetova, the duo won the title in Dubai and were runner-ups in Qatar and Miami.

Gracheva, with Another Round Three Stint
World No. 71 Varvara Gracheva has reached the round of 32 in Paris for the second successive season. This year, she achieved this feat after upsetting the two Australians, namely Astra Sharma and Ajla Tomljanovic, in three sets.
It has been a good year for the 21-year-old Russian who made her top 70 debut this season. In fact, her ongoing run in Paris is her best one of 2022 yet.
So far, Gracheva was beaten in the early rounds after clearing the qualifying matches. For instance, in St. Petersburg, she fell to Elena Rybakina in the opener after winning the three preceding prelims. It was a similar story in Dubai and Madrid Open as well, where she fell to Marketa Vondrousova and Ons Jabeur respectively.
Her last stint was in Strasbourg where she lost to Magda Linette in the first round.
Gracheva v Mertens Prediction and Tip
Mertens is the heavy favourite here – she has a far superior pedigree in singles and doubles when compared to Gracheva, who only has nine ITF finals to her name (7-2).
That said, the Belgian isn’t in the best of form and she is not the most consistent performer. Beating her is not an impossible task, but Gracheva will need to bring her best foot forward. The Russian makes for a good underdog bet while on a safer side, Mertens should bag this.
