Rybakina Breezes Past Volynets

Last year’s quarterfinalist Elena Rybakina marched into the third round of this year’s edition with a dominant display in the Round of 64.

The 16th seed needed just 67 minutes to dispatch America’s Katie Volynets 6-4, 6-0. Rybakina wasn’t broken in the match, but she converted four of 11 break points to score a convincing win.

It was a much easier affair for the World No. 16, who had needed two hours and 20 minutes to battle past Arntxa Rus in the first round.

A finalist in Adelaide this year, Rybakina improved her season record to 20-9 and improved her clay court record to 9-5.

She looked in good touch on Thursday, but will have her task cut out against the experienced Keys.

Keys Knocks Out Garcia

Madison Keys advanced to the third round at the French Open for the sixth time in her career.

The American, ranked No. 22 in the world, took an hour and 32 minutes to beat Caroline Garcia of France in straight sets.

The 22nd seed couldn’t close out the first set after building a 5-2 lead, allowing Garcia to get the break back, but she broke back immediately to take the first set.

Neither player could break in the second set with Garcia saving two break points in the sixth game. Keys dominated the ensuing tiebreaker to win the contest 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).

A semifinalist in 2018 and a quarterfinalist in 2019, Keys had begun her 2022 Challenge with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win over Anna Kalinskaya.

Keys, who won the Adelaide-2 title to start the season, was a semifinalist at the Australian Open and also reached the quarterfinals in Indian Wells. She had a poor start on clay, coming into teh French Open with a 1-3 season record on the surface. But two wins would have surely given her some confidence.
