Casper Ruud v Hubert Hurkacz Head to Head

This will be their first meeting.

Ruud Barely Beats Sonego

Casper Ruud needed 5 sets to best Lorenzo Sonego of Italy and while the final set was not that close the match really was. For a solid part of the 4th set, Sonego was the better player but ultimately Ruud proved the better player.

He stayed solid, he stayed patient and when the chance presented itself he took it. It was a really good performance from Ruud who had 39 winners and won over 70 % of his first serves. That’s as good as it gets but Sonego was at times spectacular.

Ruud is playing a solid event but he had some issues. At times he seems quite passive so play that attack him (Tsonga, Sonego) had a decent shot at beating him. You can perhaps bait him into errors but Ruud has been solid for a while and that rarely happens.

Hurkacz is a good matchup for him and Ruud will be glad to play him instead of another player. A quarterfinal in Paris is on the menu for Ruud.

Hurkacz As Solid as Ever

Hubert Hurkacz has not dropped a single set this week but his opposition has not been the strongest. Goffin is a solid player but he did not produce a good effort against the Polish player. He had a very hard time taming Hurkacz and his serve as Hubert won 81 % of his first serves.

That’s too much if you’re the returning player and you hope to win the match. Hurkacz also played the crucial rallies very well. He saved all 5 break points he faced while converting all 5 he had on Goffin’s serve.

Goffin was actually the first player to create break chances against Hurkacz this week which is another impressive stat. That serve will be crucial against Ruud who can have problems with returning. Tsonga had a lot of success with his serve against him so Hurkacz could look to that.

Overall it will be a very solid chance for Hubert if he keeps this level of play. I don’t see a reason why he won’t.

Ruud v Hurkacz Prediction and Tip

On paper, this should be a matchup that Ruud should win. He’s ranked, his game is overall more complete and it’s clay. That is all true but the reality is different. This clay in Paris is faster than usual clay which makes players like Hurkacz dangerous. It doesn’t help that he’s serving spectacularly as well.

Ruud will have to return better. He’s had trouble with it in the past and he will need to be aggressive. Hurkacz is a wall and it’s hard to break him down but Ruud will need to do to win. Chances will be scarce so he will need to go for it when he gets it.

I think it will be close but I think Ruud will serve the problem in the end. Especially if the match is later in the day when conditions are slower.
