Andrey Rublev v Marin Cilic Head to Head

There have been six previous meetings between these two players and Rublev leads the head to head 4-2.

This includes just one match on clay, which was their first ever meeting way back in 2015 in Geneva which Cilic won in three sets. Their most recent meeting came earlier this year at the Australian Open which Cilic won in four sets as well.

Rublev Gains from Sinner Retirement

Down a set in his fourth round match, Rublev had his back against the wall but his opponent Jannik Sinner suffered a knee injury soon after that. That allowed Rublev to come back and level the match before Sinner retired from the match in the third set, having dropped his serve.

Rublev will be relieved, sure, but given how he’s gone about his business all tournament, it would have been foolhardy to count him out of the contest even if Sinner had been fit.

After all, the Russian had needed four sets to come through in each of his previous three rounds as well, having defeated Soon-woo Kwon, Federico Delbonis and Cristian Garin to reach round four.

And now, up against Cilic, Rublev will be a lot more confident to reach his maiden Grand Slam semifinal given his opponent’s vulnerabilities on clay.

Cilic’s Never Made French Open Semifinal Earlier

Having been a finalist at each of the other three Grand Slams, Cilic has never made it past the quarterfinal phase at Roland-Garros. He will look at this as that opportunity having reached the last eight stage with some solid showings in this competition.

Cilic, who had featured in four clay court tournaments before the French Open and had a meagre 4-4 win-loss record in them, stunned Daniil Medvedev in straight sets in his fourth round match.

That Cilic managed to down the second seed 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 was remarkable given Medvedev looked to have overcome his own issues on clay and registered three back to back straight-set wins to reach round four.

The Croat needed just an hour and 47 minutes, won 90% of his first serve points and faced not a single break-point in the entire encounter to come through to the quarterfinals here for the third time in his career.

Can he now dole out a similar hiding to another Russian?

Rublev v Cilic Prediction and Tip

Rublev is 4/6 to win this but take nothing away from the manner in which Cilic has come through in this competition for the loss of just one set. Expect Cilic to push Rublev here and we could also see an upset.
