Gauff Into First Grand Slam Semifinal

Eighteen-year-old Coco Gauff made it to her maiden Grand Slam semifinal with a straight sets win over compatriot Sloane Stephens at Roland Garros on Tuesday.

Gauff, who hasn’t dropped a set in the run up to the final four, had gone up a break early in the first set on Tuesday. But she couldn’t close out the set at 5-2, with Stephens winning three games in a row to draw level. Gauff, however, broke again in the final game of the set to go one-up.

Stephens started the second with a break, but her younger rival broke back immediately. Gauff was cruising towards a victory after winning five straight games, but she couldn’t close out the match as Stephens broke back to make things interesting. Gauff responded with a fourth break in the very next game to clinch the match 7-5, 6-2.

The 18th seed, ranked No. 23 in the world, improved to 19-10 this season. Gauff had breezed past her first four opponents, defeating Rebecca Marino, Alison Van Uytvanck, Kaia Kanepi and Elise Mertens in the first four rounds respectively.

The 2018 junior champion at Roland Garros, Gauff is now two away from winning the title at the senior level.

Trevisan Continues to Progress

After having cruised past the first four rounds in straight sets, Italy’s Martina Trevisan needed three sets to overcome 17th seed Leylah Fernandez in the quarterfinal to reach her first Grand Slam semifinal.

The 2020 French Open quarterfinalist had not gone past the second round of any other major. She began this year’s tournament with dominating wins over Harriet Dart, Magda Linette and Daria Saville in the first three rounds respectively, before battling past Aliaksandra Sasnovich 7-6 (12-10), 7-5 in the Round of 16.

On Tuesday, Trevisan needed two hours and 21 minutes to win the battle of lefties 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3. Winning 71% points on her first serve, Trevisan struck 43 winners and made 29 unforced errors, compared to Fernandez’s 29 winners and 44 unforced errors.

After winning the first set with ease, the world No. 59 had a match point at 5-4, (40-30) in the second. The Canadian, however, saved the match point and then went on to win the set in the tiebreak to stay in the contest.

Trevisan took control of the third, going up 4-0 and 5-1. Fernandez did try to make a comeback by getting back two breaks, but it was too little too late as the Italian marched on.

Gauff v Trevisan Prediction and Tip

Both players have displayed great form throughout the course of the tournament. Gauff’s looked more comfortable in her five wins, while the last two matches have tested Trevisan’s ability to dig deep. Expect a close three-set contest with Gauff emerging victorious.
