Taylor Fritz v Tim van Rijthoven Head to Head
No previous matches have been played between these two at the highest level. Rather interestingly, they had faced off on the Futures circuit in 2014, where Fritz had won a qualifier in a clay court competition.

Fritz Has Struggled on Grass
For the kind of game that Fritz has, it’s a bit of a surprise to see him struggle on grass, at least as compared to his record on the other surfaces.
The American, who is just one spot away from his career-best ranking of 13th in the world, has won just 12 of the 26 matches he’s played in main draws of grass court tournaments.
This includes a third round loss at Wimbledon, the only tournament he played on grass last year.
That said, Fritz did win a title on grass in 2019, clinching the Eastbourne International for the loss of just one set. A shock second round loss at Wimbledon was followed by a year of no tennis on grass as a result of the pandemic and it looks like Fritz will need to resume his work to get back to his winning ways on this surface.
Starting out in the second round following a first round bye, it would be interesting to see how he starts off here on grass following a less than impressive showing on clay.

Van Rijthoven Scrapes Past Ebden
Not much was expected out of the wildcard van Rijthoven who had only played one match on grass in his career before this. That had come at the Surbiton Challenger qualifier last week and he had fallen in three sets in his very first encounter.
Instead, van Rijthoven managed to come away with a shock but pleasant win over Australia’s Matthew Ebden, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (9) to enter the second round of this competition.
In a match that nearly lasted two hours, van Rijthoven blasted 13 aces and faced just two break-points but at the same time broke his opponent once off the only chance he got to do so.
It was van Rijthoven’s ability to hold his nerve during the tie-breakers that got him through. Especially the second in which the Dutchman saved three set-points to complete the victory.
Can he now surprise an opponent whose record on grass isn’t the best?
