World no. 17 Belinda Bencic made a solid start to the grass court season, beating America’s Madison Brengle in the first round of the Rosmalen Open on Tuesday.
The second seed Swiss needed just an hour and 23 minutes for a 6-4, 6-3 victory. The first set was a tough one, with Bencic having to save four break points. She, too, had four opportunities to break Brengle’s serve and she capitalised on one of those chances to go a set up.
In the second, the reigning Olympic gold medalist faced just one break point, which she could not save, but she converted three of five to ease into the next round.
Bencic will now aim to win the next contest and reach a fifth quarterfinal of the season. The 25-year-old had captured her sixth career title in Charleston in April. She was also a semifinalist in Miami and made it to the last eight in Sydney and St. Petersburg.

Kalinskaya Battles Past Lamens
World no. 86 Anna Kalinskaya needed an hour and 42 minutes to see off the Netherlands’ Suzan Lamens in straight sets on Tuesday to register her first ever WTA main draw win on grass courts.
After both players traded a break in the first set, Kalinskaya won a closely contested tiebreak. She made a dominant start to the second, building a 5-2 lead with two breaks of serves, but Lamens pulled one break back, only to extend the match by a game as the Russian broke back immediately to seal the match 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
Kalinskaya had a 0-7 main draw record on grass, having played her first on the surface in 2017.
The 23-year-old will be looking to reach her second quarterfinal of the season, having finished as a semifinalist in Guadalajara.
Bencic v Kalinskaya Prediction and Tip
Bencic has a much better record on grass and should win this but expect Kalinskaya to put up some sort of a fight. Can expect a few games.
