Bad Grass Season Start for Fritz

Taylor Fritz opened the season well but his level dropped off a cliff in the past few weeks. It coincided with some injury concerns as well so that might be an explanation. Bad play persistent though in Den Bosch last week when Fritz got ousted by local hero Tim van Rijthoven who reached the final there.

It was an unserious match by Fritz who had a loose attitude with a strong belief he would pull it out in the end. He nearly did but it was a bad start for him. Redemption might come in Queen’s Club but Jack Draper is a serious challenge n British soil.

It will be a hostile environment for Fritz who generally plays a very solid game. His serve is well-known and his groundstrokes can be deadly. It’s not as easy for him to get set on grass because the pace of play is so quick and the ball doesn’t bounce that high.

He can also spray errors when his game is a tiny bit off so that’s another danger. If everything works well he’s super fun to watch and very dangerous on grass but that’s not been the case in the past few weeks.

Draper Back Home in London

Jack Draper is a player many Brits should remember. He will probably break into the top 100 next week or one of these weeks as the grass season unfolds. Draper grew up in London and around tennis with his mother a former junior champion and his father a longtime executive in the Lawn Tennis Association.

He is very talented and very young (20) with a killer left hand. His forehand is very good, his serve is very good and generally, he’s a talent that should, in theory, carry British tennis alongside Emma Raducanu for a while. This year has been a slow breakout year for him with a 26-6 record.

On grass, he’s 4-8 so far but don’t get fooled by that. He is certainly capable of playing strong tennis as he showed last year taking a set off of Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon. Draper’s form has dipped in the past month or so but expect him to pick that up as he plays more important matches.

Surbiton has been a decent warm-up for him but now it’s time to show what he can do against some of the best. Fritz is ripe for the taking.

Fritz v Draper Prediction and Tip

Obviously, Taylor Fritz is the far better player right now but the British player will fancy his chances his. This is a matchup he can win if he plays the way he can. His serve will be key and he if can keep a high level of serving he will put Fritz under a lot of trouble.

I see this match as one being decided in tiebreaks. I don’t see either winning it without some close tiebreak so the over is something to keep an eye on. I also do think that in this spot, Draper is the better value because Fritz folded in a similar situation last week in Den Bosch.

Draper played well in Queen’s last year so I’ll back him to do that again. Take the Brit.

Tip: Draper to win in three sets: 4/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
