After a first round bye and a subsequent win over the rather unfancied Dominik Stricker in the second, Tsitsipas was put to the sword by the aging veteran Andy Murray at the Stuttgart Open last week.
In what was his first grass court competition for the season, the Greek number one lost 7-6 (4), 6-3 to Murray, who had started out at 4/3 in the encounter.
What this means is Tsitsipas’ form on grass continues to leave a lot to desire, with the world number five having lost his opener at Wimbledon last year. It was also his only match on grass in 2021.
He starts off against a player who should not pose too many difficulties for him but can Tsitsipas show the kind of dominance one expects from him against a player of that pedigree. It is the kind of performance which should keep in a better stead moving into the season’s third Grand Slam on grass.

Bonzi Coming in from Injury Issues
Bonzi has played a couple of matches on grass this season and won them both. And just before he was about to take to court for the third match, Bonzi had to withdraw from it because of an injury, giving Oscar Otte a free passage to the semifinal.
The Frenchman had earlier featured at Wimbledon in his only other tournament he’s played on grass in his career. Once last year, and in 2018 before that.
He needed to qualify for both those editions, losing in the first round in the 2018 edition but going on to win his opener last season. He then lost to Marin Cilic but not before he had pushed him into a fourth set tie-breaker.
All this points to how Tsitsipas would do well to not take Bonzi for granted in this one or face early trouble.
