Maria Sakkari had high hopes at Roland Garros with many considering her a dark horse candidate to win the event. None of that happened as she had an early exit with plenty of time to consider what went wrong.
After some time off, she was slated for a strong event in Nottingham but it did not happen. She’s been fairly decent on the surface in the past but her Nottingham play has been fairly shaky. It’s time to rebuild that confidence after a very disappointing run in Paris and Nottingham.
She’s had a decent year overall with a 22-11 record but a player of her calibre was expected to do more. She did not win a single title this season despite playing a couple of finals. It’s a tricky opponent in round one especially since Jeanjean played on this surface already.
She will certainly need to improve her level from Nottingham because if she plays like that against Jeanjean, she might actually get beaten.

Jeanjean Continues Playing Well
Leolia Jeanjean build up some confidence earlier in the year playing some minor events and it’s starting to pay off in the bigger events. She had an amazing run at Roland Garros and now she’s continuing to play well even on a different surface.
Grass is not her best surface traditionally but she’s simply proving that her talent is enough now that she can fully focus on tennis. She’s healthy she’s believing in herself and she’s enjoying her time on the court. It’s been a great year overall with a 30-11 record.
The qualifying saw her defeat Natalija Stevanovic and Stefanie Voegele in straight sets and that’s some solid wins for her. If she keeps playing well and building her game she will finish firmly in the top 100. She’s up to 160 already and another strong run in Berlin could help her achieve that.
Sakkari v Jeanjean Prediction and Tip
So Maria Sakkari is the better player overall but she’s certainly vulnerable at this stage of the season. Grass is not her best surface but she has played well on it in the past and certainly can do it again. Nottingham proved a blueprint on how to beat her and Jeanjean knows that.
The French player will need a very strong outing to do that but she’s capable of it. She can serve well and she likes to attack and that can do the trick. I don’t think Sakkari will lose this match because I do think she’ll be a bit better this week than last week.
I can see Jeanjean keeping it close or actually win a set. So I’ll back Maria to do it in three.
