Marino Enjoying her Resurgence

Former world number 38 Rebecca Marino is having herself quite a season, at least statistically. Her tally stands at 30-10 as of Monday as she finds herself just seven places shy of a top 100 entry.

The 31-year-old Canadian reached three ITF finals this season – going the distance in one of them. She also made it to the main draw of the two preceding Grand Slams but couldn’t quite make it past the opening match.

With the action now switching to grass, Marino will hope to keep that rhythm going. However, it is likely to be a huge challenge for her.

Last week, she featured in Nottingham where she fell to Maria Sakkari in the second round – but not before taking the match to three sets. Here in Birmingham, she started as a qualifier and dismissed Kimberly Birrell and Cristina Bucsa to compete in the main round.

Ostapenko has a superior grass pedigree and beating her will not be an easy feat.

Ostapenko Leads the Draw

World No. 16 Jelena Ostapenko is the top seed in this year’s Birmingham Classic. She has a decent track record in the tournament, having reached the quarterfinal twice.

The Latvian is also well-versed with the grass courts as she won the Eastbourne International last year and has reached the penultimate rounds in Wimbledon twice.

As for her recent form, Ostapenko had a disappointing clay swing with her best result coming in the French Open where she reached round two.

Jelena was much more clinical on the hard courts; she made it to the semis in St. Petersburg and Doha and won the title in Dubai after dismissing the likes of Iga Swiatek, Sofia Kenin, Petra Kvitova, and Simona Halep.

Marino v Ostapenko Prediction and Tip

Ostapenko is the heavy favourite here. That said, Marino has had a bit more practice on the grass of late and given her experience, she will fancy her prospects of an upset. Backing the Canadian is not the worst bet to make.

On paper, Ostapenko should win this one comfortably on account of her superior pedigree and WTA form although, it may be a challenge. On a safer side, this match may potentially see a fair number of games.
