Maia Caps off a Historic Week

Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia has found new heights on the WTA Tour. Last week in Nottingham, she won the first WTA title of her long career by defeating the likes of Maria Sakkari, Tereza Martincova, and Alison Riske.

She also took home the doubles crown with Shuai Zhang; it was the third such final of her season – including the Australian Open doubles with Anna Danilina.

As a result, Maia now finds herself ranked #32 on the singles circuit – a career-best feat for her.

Propelled by this newly-found success, Beatriz will look to keep things going. She has been wonderfully consistent this season as she bagged two Challenger finals on clay and also reached the semifinal in Monterrey and round three in Miami.

Given Kvitova’s inconsistent spell and overall shaky form, the Brazilian will certainly fancy her prospects of toppling the Czech.

Kvitova, Looking for a Turnaround

If this were any other season, number five seed Petra Kvitova would have started as an overwhelming favourite here. However, 2022 hasn’t been a kind season for her as she struggles to deliver wins and find a rhythm to her game.

Case in point, there have been only two instances where the former world number two has won successive matches in a tournament. In both those cases (WTA Dubai and Miami Open), she reached the quarterfinal.

Her clay swing was a disastrous one as she lost her opening-round bout in Charleston, Stuttgart, and Madrid. In the French Open, she fell to Daria Saville in the round of 64 in straight sets.

On the back of these continued struggles, Kvitova is now World No. 31. That said, the 32-year-old has clearly got a fair bit of tennis left in her and can very well rediscover her groove once again.

Kvitova v Maia Prediction and Tip

This is an evenly-matched affair. Maia’s recent momentum is countered by Kvitova’s enviable pedigree and superior experience.

This should be a cracker of a match – one that may very well go to three sets before we see a winner. On a safer note, it has all the makings of being a long affair.
