Van de Zandschulp Made to Work by Qualifier

In theory, van de Zandschulp could not have asked for a kinder opponent in the first round than the British qualifier Paul Jubb, the world number 227.

The Dutchman got the job done in the end, but it was a lot harder work than he might have liked.

The match began with the first three games going against serve. Jubb was ahead at that stage, but the match was soon level and van de Zandschulp went on to win the subsequent tie-break.

The second set went with serve, but then Jubb was presented with three set points. He could not take the first two, but converted the third.

Any hopes of a British upset began to fade when Jubb was broken at the start of the third set, and two more breaks helped seal the Dutchman’s progress through to the second round.

Dimitrov Ends Norrie’s Hopes

Dimitrov who won this tournament back in 2014, ended the hopes at the first attempt of the local favourite, Cameron Norrie, the number three seed, who had made the final of this event last year.

The first set was dominated by serve to the extent that neither man created or faced  a break point, with Norrie winning the subsequent tie-break,

However, the British number one made a bad start to the second set, was broken in two successive games, and never recovered.

It was Norrie who had the first break opportunity in the third set, but he could not take it and paid the price when he was broken next game.

He did save a match point on his own serve, but could not prevent Dimitrov closing out the match next game.
