Ostapenko Overcomes Marino

Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko found herself in quite a match against Rebecca Marino in the Birmingham Classic opener. The World No. 16 needed two hours to bag the win with 6-2, 5-7, 6-3; in the second set, she was up 5-1 before the Canadian fought back and won a gutsy six games in a row.

Things are likely to get more tricky against Yastremska as the Ukrainian is known to put up a solid resistance and will not be an easy player to subdue.

That said, Ostapenko has got the history on her side with a superior record on grass – including a two-time quarterfinal appearance right here and a semifinal stint in Wimbledon 2018.

Additionally, Ostapenko had a good run on hard courts this year as she won the Dubai Championships and reached the semis in St. Petersburg and Doha. This should make it relatively easy for her to play on grass.

Yastremska Tames Linette

Unlike Ostapenko, Dayana Yastremska found herself in an easier opening match against Poland’s Magda Linette. The 22-year-old won the match in straight sets with 6-4, 6-3.

With this, she also snapped her four-match losing streak. She last played in the Libema Open where she was downed by the eventual champion Ekaterina Alexandrova in three sets. Before that, Dayana lost her first-round fixtures in Paris (Challenger and Grand Slam).

Since returning to the tour from her suspension last season, Yastremska has been working hard to reclaim her former glory when she was a part of the top 30.

Now ranked World No. 79, her highlights of the current year entail a runner-up feat in Lyon and a quarterfinal run in Dubai (as a qualifier). This, however, was followed by early exits in the Sunshine Doubles.

Ostapenko v Yastremska Prediction and Tip

Ostapenko has the upper hand here – she is experienced, nuanced, and has a good resume when it comes to top-tier tournaments. However, the possibility of an upset does exist and those who fancy the underdogs may very well back Yastremska.

Given the resilience of the latter, it would be a safe call to back this one seeing a fair number of games.
