Maia Upsets Kvitova

Picking up right where she left, Beatriz Haddad Maia commenced her campaign in Birmingham with a 7-6(4), 6-2 win over the two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova.

The Brazilian fought valiantly to break her opponent’s spirits in the first set and thereafter, it was just a matter of time before she reached round two.

Maia is cruising on new heights; she is now World No. 32 (a career-best for her) with a tally of 30-12. Last week, she won the first singles title of her career by upsetting the likes of Maria Sakkari, Tereza Martincova, and Alison Riske in Nottingham. She also won the doubles title there with Shuai Zhang.

A few weeks back, the 26-year-old also reached consecutive finals in Paris and Saint-Malo Challengers.

Beatriz also demonstrated her proficiency on hard courts by reaching the doubles final in the Sydney International and Australian Open with Anna Dalinina.

Armed with this confidence, Maia looks primed to carve numerous breakthroughs.

Frech Survives Diaz

Poland’s Magdalena Frech battled in a three-set slogfest to surpass Spain’s Nuria Parrizas Diaz 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-3.

In a way, it is a big win for her as she had lost her last four matches on the tour. Following early exits in Makarska and the French Open, Frech played in Nottingham last week where she was upset by the British qualifier Yuriko Miyazaki in three sets.

A good chunk of Magdalena’s season is marked with such loss in the opening rounds. The only time she managed to go deep was on the clay courts in Saint-Malo and Paris Challengers.

With no noticeable victories on grass courts, it is hard to imagine the current world number 91 upsetting the in-form Maia.

Maia v Frech Prediction and Tip

Given her form and momentum, Maia should do well to win this one in straight sets. After all, she has beaten a few top-20 players this season and has been nothing short of brilliant on all three surfaces.

Frech may put up a fight but ultimately, her efforts may not be enough to keep the Brazilian at bay.
