Stan Wawrinka v Tommy Paul Head to Head

They played once before and it came at the Paris Masters in 2020. Wawrinka won in three sets.

Winning Return To Grass For Wawrinka

Stan Wawrinka took on his good friend Frances Tiafoe in the opening round of the Queen’s Club event. They played a very competitive match and Wawrinka came back to win against Tiafoe despite being down a break in the final set. The Swiss ace played a superb match on his own serve but failed to create much pressure on return.

Wawrinka did not serve that well hitting only 58 % of his first serves but he hit 22 aces to only two doubles faults. He also won 89 % of points behind his first serve indicating a very high level of precision in his play.

Both the forehand and the backhand worked rather well and he was able to pull out the match. A similar thing is expected in this match although Paul has a fairly strong return. Wawrinka needs to play well and be precise in his shots to keep this match a close one.

I don’t see him creating much pressure on return so his serve will be incredibly important.

Huge Win For Paul Over Shapovalov

In a match that lasted two days, Tommy Paul proved better than Denis Shapovalov beating him in three sets. Paul and Shapovalov were forced to suspend play last night due to darkness just when Shapovalov won the 2nd set. The Canadian had strong momentum at that time and the break did not aid him.

Upon return today Paul was once again the one who found his rhythm quicker and he was able to win the match 6-3 in the final set. That final set simply was better for Paul as he was more consistent with his serving. Both were very comfortable behind their first serve but quite weak behind the 2nd.

The crucial rallies were won by Paul as he saved all three break points he faced. He will need a similar thing against Wawrinka as he will get chances which he will need to convert clinically. He will also have to save a couple of break points where his serve will be key again.

Paul is fairly consistent in his play as there is very few things that fluster him but he can get frustrated if the rallies drag on.

Wawrinka v Paul Prediction and Tip

So overall Wawrinka is clearly the better player but Paul is a bit more serious in his approach than Tiafoe. I expect him to challenge Wawrinka quite well with a solid chance to beat him as well. Wawrinka could win the match as well but he will need a near-perfect match to do so, especially when serving.

At this moment I think  Paul is a bit better on grass and I think he will win this one. It’s going to be close though as I can’t see the American smash Wawrinka easily. We might even see three sets.

Tip: Paul to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
