Cilic Wins 35th Match at Queen’s Club

World no. 17 Marin Cilic earned his 35th victory at the Queen’s Club on Friday to advance to the semifinals for the sixth time in the tournament.

Cilic, who has the most number of wins in the tournament, was a champion at Queen’s in 2012 and 2018 and finished runner-up in 2013 and 2017.

On Friday, the Croatian continued his solid run in this year’s edition, beating Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 in an hour and 48 minutes. Cilic struck 36 winners, including 11 aces.

While the first set was a competitive one with Cilic dominating the tiebreak, the second set saw Cilic race to a 5-1 lead. The Finn made a gallant comeback bid winning three straight games, but the Croatian steadied himself and served out the match to score a second straight straight sets win.

Cilic had beaten Alexander Bublik 7-6, 7-5 in the last round. He was stretched to three sets though by Liam Broady in the opener.

Krajinovic Ends Peniston’s Dream Run

He was 0-4 on grass courts before this season, but Filip Krajinovic improved to 3-0 on the surface in 2022 with a third straight win this week to reach the semifinals at the Queen’s Club.

Krajinovic’s comeback win on Friday ended Ryan Peniston’s dream ATP Tour debut, which saw the Briton stun Casper Ruud in the first round and Francisco Cerundolo in the second.

He claimed the first set on Friday as well, but the Serb clawed his way back into the contest getting the second with a solitary break and then broke the debutant thrice in the third while dropping serve just once to complete a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory.

The World No. 48 improved to 15-11 this season and will be competing in his second semifinal of the season on Saturday, having made it that far in Montpellier.

Krajinovic had begun the tournament with a straight sets win over Jenson Brooksby and then defeated another American, Sam Querrey 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the Round of 16.
