Alejandro Davidovich Fokina had a prolific junior career, climbing as high as No.1. And despite recording strong results on clay (as is the tendency with the Spanish continent) he won the Wimbledon juniors title in 2017 without dropping a set.
Davidovich Fokina’s introduction to grasscourt tennis on the senior tour hasn’t yielded that sort of accomplishment of the junior circuit, but that is largely due to the fact that he had only ever played one main draw match on the surface prior to the 2021 season.
The 23-year-old has compiled a 14-15 record for 2022. While that number will need significant improvement in the second half of the campaign, he has reached a Masters 1000 final for the first time in his career at Monte Carlo. But he failed to build on that momentum. He couldn’t win back-to-back matches at his next four clay-court events, rounding off the clay swing with a shock first-round defeat at the French Open.
Davidovich Fokina has since returned to the grass in earnest at Queens where made the quarterfinals, losing in straight sets to Botic van de Zandschulp.

Martinez Winless in Seven
Pedro Martinez has lost his last seven matches on the trot and arrives in Eastbourne sitting precariously close on the edge of a Top 50 exit. It is such a quick turnaround for a man who appeared well on course to climb inside the world’s Top 40.
The World No. 49 lost to Francisco Cerundolo last time out at Queens. That means his first-round win over Ugo Humbert in Monte Carlo is now over two months old – the scene of his last match win.
Since capturing his maiden ATP title in Santiago at the end of February, Martinez has endured the worst possible post-celebration hangover which is showing little signs of ending soon.
Martinez’s record on the grass is hardly going to inspire a lot of confidence, but he did reach the third round of Wimbledon last season, scoring a massive win over Gael Monfils.

The grass is hardly Martinez’s forte and there is very little to suggest he can find his feet on Monday having lost seven on the bounce.
