Sonego Was the Runner-Up Last Year

Lorenzo Sonego was the runner-up on his Eastbourne debut last year, losing a thrilling three-set final to Alex de Minaur.

The 27-year-old Italian comes to this year’s edition with a 2-2 record on grass. He was a quarterfinalist in Stuttgart, where he fell to eventual champion Matteo Berrettini and then lost his opening round match to Denis Kudla at Queen’s.

A semifinalist in Buenos Aires, Sonego also made the last eight in Sydney and Cordoba this year, thanks to which he has an overall season record of 14-16.

The World No. 32 is 13-8 on grass courts and reached the fourth round of Wimbledon last season.

Duckworth Rebounds to Down Ymer

World no. 76 James Duckworth fought back from a set down to defeat Sweden’s Mikael Ymer 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 and qualify for the main draw in Eastbourne.

On Saturday, Duckworth had beaten Britain’s Daniel Cox 6-3, 6-1 in the first qualifying round.

The two wins scored over the weekend were his only wins registered at any level this season. He had come into the qualifiers having lost all of his eight matches this year.

In the main draws, the 30-year-old has a 0-6 record this season.

A 5-11 tour-level grass court record isn’t too encouraging for the Australian either. He will be hoping to get his first tour-level win on Monday, but the odds will be stacked against him.
