World No. 74 Dayana Yastremska had a relatively good time in Birmingham last week where she reached the quarterfinal. Her journey entailed wins over Magda Linette and the top seed Jelena Ostapenko.
Ultimately, she fell to Shuai Zhang in 5-7, 6-4 but in the process, she did deliver her best run on the WTA Tour since the Bogota Open in April.
Yastremska has had a pretty erratic spell this year; she is 19-14 with her best results coming on early in the season in Dubai 500 (quarterfinal run as a qualifier) and the runner-up feat in the Lyon Open.
The 22-year-old, who is the former world number 21, has got a good resume against some of the top players on the tour. The fact that she managed to crack top 30 in her teenage years tells us that she is equipped to go further; it’s just a matter of time, confidence, and consistency.

Vekic Fielding a Grass Pedigree
Former World No. 19 Donna Vekic continues her journey to the resurgence after losing her tempo on account of surgery and the subsequent recovery. This year, she has taken things slowly and steadily by restricting her participation in the tour.
Now ranked #93, the Croatian is certainly primed for a deep run considering her fondness for the grass courts. She has three finals on the surface, the most recent being the Nottingham Open in 2019.
Last week, Donna delivered one of her better performances since winning the Courmayeur Open in October 2021. She reached her first quarterfinal in quite some time in Birmingham where, as a qualifier, she dismissed Coco Vandeweghe and Caty McNally. While Vekic finally lost to Sorana Cirstea, it wasn’t before pushing that match to three sets.
Vekic v Yastremska Prediction and Tip
Compared to the Ukrainian, Vekic has a much superior pedigree with nine finals to her name and a superior tour experience. However, the fact that she is 0-3 against Dayana means she is at a distinct psychological disadvantage.
The Croat will hope to make up for it with her better grass form but in all fairness, anything can happen here.
