Bad Start on Grass for Norrie

Cameron Norrie played pretty well on grass last year reaching the final of the ATP 500 event in Queen’s club yet this year he lost in the opening round of that event. It was a close match against Grigor Dimitrov but the Bulgarian proved better taking it in three.

Due to that, Norrie opted to play in Eastbourne to get some more playing time before Wimbledon because one match is simply not enough. Especially for a player who went 6-2 on the surface last year. The draw in Eastbourne gave him a tricky challenge in Nakashima.

Norrie is the better player but the American has been improving dramatically over the past few weeks playing better and better. There is a lot of talent there and he will certainly challenge Norrie heavily. An obvious problem for Norrie against Dimitrov was his 2nd serve.

He only won 9 of 25 points and that’s something he needs to fix otherwise it will be a persistent problem on grass. On his first serve he was solid and he needs to keep that percentage high to win matches.

Strong Beginning in Eastbourne For Nakashima

Taking on a native British player on the grass on British soil is always tricky because they mostly know their way around a grass court. Generally, their game works well on grass as well so if you have a bad day you can easily get beaten.

Nakashima did not make that mistake in the opening round of Eastbourne when he took on Jay Clarke. He took the match into his hands early and never let it go. He was aggressive both on serve and return and cruised to a 6-1 6-3 finish.

He was pretty good on his 2nd serve which will be a crucial thing for him against Norrie. He lost to Adrian Mannarino because of it in Den Bosch so that’s a weak spot for him. The win was an impressive one but Clarke is one of the worst British players on the grass having a 9-27 record on the surface all time.

So it’s impressive but explainable. Nakashima is having a solid year 18-15 and he improved a lot but so has Norrie. Last year the Brit won easily and he’ll be favoured again.

Norrie v Nakashima Prediction and Tip

So Norrie is obviously the better player overall and better on grass. Nakashima beat him in 2020 in Delray Beach but since then Norrie improved quite a bit. His biggest improvement was in self-belief and he is far more confident in his game since then.

Nakashima improved less overall but he’s still young and for him it’s about gaining enough experience on the biggest Tour. He’s been decent on grass but he’s also been beatable. Norrie will certainly have an edge in this one and I expect him to win a very close match.
