Alize Cornet v Tatjana Maria Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, Cornet winning on each occasion. She won in three sets at the French Open in 2016, and again on the hard courts of the Canadian Masters, two years later.

Cornet Gets Instant Revenge on Kalinskaya

Cornet recently made headlines when she was booed off court by the home fans when she was forced to retire from the French Open with a thigh injury. That led many of her professionals to rush to her defence, claiming her treatment was unfair and harsh.

This is just her second tournament since then – the first on grass did not go so well, and she was beaten in the first round in Berlin last week by Anna Kalinskaya.

However, she had the opportunity for instant revenge when she was drawn against Kalinskaya again in the opening round.

This time Cornet sprinted out of the blocks and took a five game lead in the first set, before Kalinskaya briefly stopped the rot, forcing a break of her own, Undeterred, Cornet served out for the set.

She began the second set badly by dropping her serve but fought back to level. And, when Kalinskaya served to stay in the match, she created the break opportunity and match point which she converted.

Maria Beats Former Wimbledon Junior Champion

Maria, who was a wildcard into this tournament, faced Anastasia Potapova in the first round, a former Wimbledon girls’ champion but who had chosen not to enter any grass court events this year prior to this.

Despite this, it was Maria who was the first to drop her serve in the first set, only to respond with two breaks of her. Maria had five set points but it took her until the sixth one to make it count.

Potapova  was broken at the start of the second set, and Maria then had the chance to  serve for the match. But she blew it and not only did Potapova break back, but she broke again to send the match into a third set.

In the third game of that set Potapova was broken again and that proved vital in the end. Both women created more break points but none were taken. That was until Potapova, serving to stay in the match, was broken for the final time.

Cornet v Maria Prediction and Tip

Maria will have home court advantage and support, but Cornet is the higher ranked and her first round match will have taken less out of her. She will be confident of progressing, especially as she has beaten Maria in their two previous meetings.
