Jelena Ostapenko v Madison Keys Head to Head
It’s 2-0 to Keys; she won their last meeting in the 2019 WTA Charleston and also their sole encounter on grass in Birmingham in 2016.

Jelena Ostapenko commenced her title defence with a clinical, 6-4, 6-4 win over Ajla Tomljanovic. The number eight seed, with a bye into round two, needed just 79 minutes to bag the win.
The world number 14 has had a pretty decent grass swing so far and by the looks of it, her Wimbledon preparations are well on track.
Although she lost to Dayana Yastremska in round two in Birmingham last week, she did move on to win the doubles title there with Lyudmyla Kichenok.
Since winning the title last season here, Ostapenko has reached only two more finals – Luxembourg (runner-up) and WTA Dubai. This year, the Latvian also featured in the semis in St. Petersburg and Doha before enduring a sharp drop in form.
In fact, this week marks the first time since February that the 25-year-old has made it this far in a tournament. Most of her preceding losses have been surprising – notably against the likes of Shelby Rogers, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Lauren Davis, and Alize Cornet.

Keys Outperforms Davis
Madison Keys commenced her grass season with a 6-4, 6-3 win over her compatriot Davis in the opener. Like Ostapenko, she too enjoyed a bye and did well to start with an easy win.
Her journey in 2022 has been rather lopsided with only a handful of deep runs. Since her title run in WTA Adelaide, she has only reached the semifinal in the Australian Open and quarters in the Indian Wells Open.
Like Jelena, she too has been stunned on the tour in early rounds – particularly by Anhelina Kalinina. The rest of her losses were rather justified as they came against Belinda Bencic (Charleston) and Maria Sakkari (Madrid). Her last tournament was the French Open where she fell to Veronika Kudermetova.
Keys v Ostapenko Prediction and Tip
Ostapenko will start as the favourite on account of her superior momentum on grass and the fact that her motivation to win may be slightly higher than Keys’. However, it is only a slight advantage that can be negated quickly by Keys – especially when we consider that the American is a worthy opponent. Expect an entertaining tennis match.
